Islamic Help hosts anniversary dinner

Helping survivors of acid attacks was the theme for a special Decade of Difference anniversary dinner staged by the Birmingham charity Islamic Help.

More than 600 guests were at the dinner at the CSN Centre in Balsall Heath to fundraise for the charity’s Smiles Better campaign which helps acid attack victims across the world with surgery, rehabilitation and livelihood programmes.

The event included Qur’anic recitations and spiritual reminders, a fundraising session, three-course meal and music from SilkRoad and Saif Adam.

The charity was started in 2003 by a group of volunteers and has since grown into an international NGO with offices in its home city of Birmingham, London, France, Australia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Tanzania, Jordan, Palestine and Yemen.

The dinner was used to honour some of its long-standing supporters, the charity’s co-founder and trustee Shaykh Sultan Niaz ul Hassan and the guest of honour, the internationally-renowned plastic surgeon Dr Muhammad Ali Jawad who is working with Islamic Help on Smiles Better and was featured in the Oscar-winning documentary Saving Face.
